Winter Commencement

After dedicating years to their studies, 1,444 Tar Heels will receive their Carolina diplomas at Winter Commencement on Sunday, Dec. 14.

Our December graduates excelled in the classroom, conducted research, dominated their sports and served the state. Now, they’ll become leaders in their chosen fields and communities, taking what they learned at Carolina to thrive in the next chapter of their lives.

Kathleen DuVal to give Winter Commencement address

The Pulitzer Prize winner and distinguished Carolina historian will speak at the Dec. 14 ceremony.

A recent recipient of the National Humanities Center fellowship who was also featured in Ken Burns’ “The American Revolution” docuseries, DuVal has spent the past 23 years teaching students at Carolina.

Class marshals have been leading Commencement since the 1800s

Over the decades, these special Tar Heels kept the event on schedule with “savoir faire,” sometimes sporting gold-headed canes.
